To end the day, South Zone Champion Houston (NASA), Texas flexed its offensive propensity in a one-sided affair over host Whittier. Read the breakdowns of each game below.

GM #1: Johnstown, Pennsylvania 3  San Diego, California 2 (F/9)

East Zone Champion Johnstown, Pennsylvania kicked off day one of the Pony-13 World Series with a thrilling 3-2 extra inning win over West Zone Finalist San Diego, California. Mason Pfeil got hold of a ball and drove it down the third base line, bringing in the winning run for Johnstown in the bottom of the ninth.

Johnstown
s Ethan Semelsberger scored the first run in the game following a triple from Connor Yoder in the third inning. Semelsberger did his part by getting on base, and then stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Nathan Moulton and Jacob Lanza both singled in the top of the sixth for San Diego. Zackery Petree was able to hold the runners on, though, and San Diego went another inning scoreless.

Ethan Janidlo singled in the bottom half of the sixth inning and brought around Yoder to score. Janidlo’s RBI single increased the Johnstown lead to 2-0. San Diego’s bats didn’t wake up until the seventh inning when Petree was taken out of the game due to the pitch limit. A walk got Brooks Harwell on base, then Mace Wheeler smacked a ball to left field for an RBI triple, decreasing Johnstown’s lead to one.

The next batter, Colton Stinkeoway perfectly laid down a sacrifice bunt and brought in Wheeler for the tying run. Johnstown had nothing going in the bottom half of the seventh, and the game went to extra innings. It wasn’t until the bottom of the ninth inning that Johnstown was able to close the game. Mason Pfeil slapped a ball passed the third baseman and brought around Jacob Polak for the game-winning, walk-off run.

Starting pitcher Zackery Petree was solid for Johnstown. He went six complete innings and struck out five. Petree allowed five hits, but none were with runners in scoring position. While starting pitcher Petree led the Johnstown defense, Connor Yoder led the Johnstown bats. Yoder went 2-for-4 on the day including an RBI triple to start the game’s scoring. Yoder also scored a run in the sixth.

Johnstown will play today at 4:30 p.m. PST/US against Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Seoul, Korea. San Diego will take on Redondo Beach, California in an elimination game at 10:30 a.m.

GM #2: Tijuana, Mexico 7  Hilo, Hawaii 1

Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana (Mexico) pulled away from West Zone Champion Hilo, Hawaii late in their Pony-13 World Series day one matchup. Tijuana scored all seven of its runs in the last three innings to secure the 7-1 victory over Hilo.

A wild pitch allowed Hilo’s Loren Iwata to cross home for the first run of the game late in the fourth inning. The run put Hilo up 1-0 in the fourth, but the Tijuana bats responded quickly.

A couple singles from Carlos Guerra and German Orozco, plus a walk, loaded the bases for Tijuana in the top of the fifth. Daniel Llamas came up to bat next and was struck with a fast ball, tying the game at one for Tijuana and loading the bases once more. Tijuana wasn’t able to capitalize on the loaded bases and only cashed in a single run.

Ariel Moreno and Antuan Franco both scored in the sixth inning to make the game 3-1 in favor in Tijuana. Tijuana followed that up with a massive seventh inning. Alfredo Serena, Orozco, and Emiliano Brito all batted in runs in the seventh. The runs pushed Tijuana’s lead to 7-1, where it remained until the end.

Tijuana starting pitcher Karin Garcia gave a solid three innings to set the tone for Mexico. Garcia struck out five batters while only giving up a single hit in the three innings he pitched. Orozco was the star on the offensive end for Tijuana. Orozco went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Llamas and Ariel Moreno also stood out, with both coming away with two hits.

GM #3: Seoul, Korea 6  Redondo Beach, California 3

The back-to-back defending Pony-13 World Series Champions from Seoul, Korea looked strong once again, as they defeated West Zone, Super Region Champion Redondo Beach, California in game three of day one. Seoul relied on a stiff defense to hold the Redondo bats to three runs in the 6-3 win.

Ko Do Yeong singled in the bottom half of the first to bring across Moon Tae Gyun for the first run of the game. Two batters later, Yeong crossed home off a Park Jun Seong single.

Redondo Beach quickly tied up the game in the next half inning. Nathan Rivera and Cooper Couig both scored a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game. Seoul didn’t let up in its half of the second, though. An error and a fielder’s choice brought in two runners in for Seoul. Seong followed that with a single to bring in another runner, and Seoul suddenly saw itself up 5-2.

The three run gap was enough wiggle room for Seoul to escape with the win. Redondo Beach added a run late, but it wasn’t enough to cut the deficit. Seoul scored an insurance run in the sixth and eventually won the game 6-3.

Seoul relied on four pitchers to get the job done against Redondo Beach. As a team, they allowed five hits and struck out five batters.

Yeong did his part to get Seoul the win on the offensive end. He accounted for half of the Seoul runs, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two run scores.

Next up for Seoul is Johnstown, Pennsylvania today in a winner's bracket game at 4:30 p.m. PST/US. Redondo Beach takes on San Diego, California in an elimination game at 10:30 a.m.

South Zone Champion Houston (NASA), Texas scored 10 first inning runs en route to a day one, 10-run rule victory over the host team from Whittier, California. Houston remained hot for four innings and won the game decisively 21-3 (F/5).

Isaiah Ramos drove in Victor Ybarra to give Whittier the 1-0 to start the game off. Houston came out of the gates storming in their half of the first, though and Whittier’s single run had little impact.

Jonathan Neel drove in Christian Rivera for Houston’s first run of the game, but that was just the start. After Neel’s hit, Darren Dyson walked, then Maddox Juarez was hit by a pitch, loading the bases up for Houston. Domenic Santilli came up to bat next and he was able to draw a walk as well. The walk brought in a runner to make the game 2-1 in favor Houston. It kept the bases loaded as well.

After a couple more walks and a hit batsman, Houston saw its lead balloon to four at 5-1. Rivera came up to bat again in the inning and smacked the ball to right field for an RBI single. Whittier used three pitchers in the very first inning, and Houston had each of their numbers. Houston ended up tallying 10 runs in the first inning, giving them a comfortable 10-1 lead.

Houston piled on the runs late in the game, including six in the fourth inning. The Houston squad ended up with 21 runs scored and now head into day two of tournament play with a lot of confidence.
