Day one recap at the Bronco-11 World Series

The game of the evening at the 11th annual Bronco-11 World Series from Chesterfield, Virginia came from Caribbean Zone Champion San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, who outlasted two-time defending B11WS champion Chicago (AFCA), Illinois 13-11 in a game that came down to the last out. The other three contests weren't as competitive, as West Zone Champion Redondo Beach, California and South Zone Champion San Antonio (Edgewood), Texas came away with two wins by 10-run rule. Mexico Zone Champion Navojoa, Sonora soundly defeated East Zone Champion Bronx, New York by way of a shut out. Read the breakdowns of each game below.

GM #1: Navojoa, Mexico 7  Bronx, New York 0

Charbel Barreras’s three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning secured Mexico Zone Champion Navojoa, Sonora a 7-0 win over East Zone Champion Bronx, New York.

Navojoa jumped out to a 3-0 in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. Pablo Rodriguez bunted his way to an infield single. Sebastian Enriquez singled to center field, advancing Rodriguez to third. With runners on the corners, Emiliano Ibarra walked loading the bases. A throwing error allowed Rodriguez to score, moving Enriquez and Ibarra into scoring position. Enriquez and Ibarra then scored on a double by Kevin Palafox.

Navojoa added another run in the top of the third inning to expand on its lead. Barreras lead off the inning with a single to left field. A defensive error allowed Ivan Gutierrez to reach and moved Barreras to second base. Another defensive error allowed Rodriguez to reach, moving, Gutierrez to second and Barreras to third. The third defensive error of the inning allowed Enriquez to reach first and scored Barreras. The series of errors enabled Navojoa to take a 4-0 lead.

Navojoa added three more runs in the top of the seventh to expand on its lead to 7-0. Franco Mendoza opened the hitting with a single to left field. Anjel Tajia doubled to right field, advancing Mendoza to third. Barreras then cleared the bases with a three-run home run.

In addition to Navojoa’s explosive offense, Navojoa’s pitching stifled the Bronx. Mendoza threw 3.2 scoreless innings, followed by two thirds of a scoreless inning from Luis Rocha and 2.2 scoreless innings from Enriquez.

Navojoa will move into the winners’ bracket and will face Caribbean Zone Champion San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic at 8 p.m. ET/US tonight. The Bronx drops into the losers’ bracket and will face North Zone Representative Chicago (AFCA), Illinois at 5:30 p.m. at Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge.

GM #2: Redondo Beach, California 12  Luzon, Philippines 2 (F/6)

Tanner Davison’s four hits and two RBI helped lead West Zone Champion Redondo Beach, California to a 12-2 victory over Asia-Pacific Zone Representative Luzon, Philippines. On the defensive side of the ball, Keiji Hattori and Evan Wieser led all Redondo Beach pitchers with two scoreless innings each in a shortened, 10-run rule game.

Redondo Beach scored two runs in the top of the first inning to open the scoring. Travis Dulmage reached first base on a dropped third strike. Dulmage advanced to second base thanks to a Davison single to center field. A double into center field by Jake Kim scored both Dulmage and Davison, putting Redondo Beach ahead 2-0.

Redondo Beach scored three more runs in the top of the third to expand its lead. Hattori opened the third inning with a walk. After stealing second, Hattori scored on a Dulmage single to center field. Redondo Beach added another run after Davison doubled to center field, scoring Dulmage. Davis then stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Redondo Beach managed to plate another run in the top of fourth. Hattori and Dulmage each reach based on defensive errors. With runners on the corners, Davison hit an infield single, scoring Hattori.

Luzon responded in the bottom of the fourth by plating two runs. Ken Madrid and Aljun Tajia each singled to open the offense for the inning. Madrid and Tajia eached advanced on a groundout to third, and a throwing error allowed Madrid to score and moved Tajia to third. Laurence Valeros then singled, scoring Tajia.

In the top of the sixth inning, California’s offense exploded for six runs. Davison scored on a fielder’s choice to open the scoring for the inning. Another fielder’s choice allowed Kim to score the second run of the inning. A Jamison Brack sacrifice fly scored Eugene Guerrero for the third run of the inning. A Hattori double to center field then scored Eric Tani and Lucas Alvear. Hattori scored the last run of the inning off a throwing error from a pickoff attempt.

Redondo Beach advances to the winners’ bracket and will play South Zone Champion San Antonio (Edgewood), Texas at 8 p.m. ET/US tonight. Luzon falls into the losers’ bracket and will face host Chesterfield, Virginia at 5:30 p.m in an elimination game.

GM #3: San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic 13  Chicago (AFCA), Illinois 11

Caribbean Zone Representative San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic outlasted the two-time defending Bronco-11 World Series champions and North Zone Representatives from Chicago (AFCA), Illinois in a thrilling 13-11 barn burner.

The game was tied at two apiece in the bottom of the third, when San Cristóbal went on a game-altering eight-run rally. Jhonny Vasquez singled to start the inning and moved to third, when Angel Cuello reached on a Chicago error. Vasquez scored on a wild pitch, as Cuello took third, when Domingo Mork walked. Felix Genao came through with an RBI single (4-2), scoring Cuello. Miguel Chavez doubled to right, scoring Mork and advancing Genoa to third. An RBI single by Derek DeLaRosa gave the Dominicans another run, when Agustin Campusano walked. Yalier Mendez singled home Chavez and put two runners in scoring position, when Dewin Richards hit into an RBI double play. Back-to-back RBI singles by Vasquez and Cuello gave San Cristóbal a commanding 10-2 lead, completing the scoring for the inning.

Chicago battled back with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth, but the Caribbean Zone Representatives countered with three runs back in the bottom of the inning. An Antonio Porterfield RBI single in the top of the fifth chipped into the AFCA deficit 13-5, before the North Zone Representatives went on a rally of their own in the top of the sixth.

With one out, an RBI triple by Rahjon Williams started the scoring for Chicago. A balk allowed Williams to score (13-7), as Christian Lott walked. A single by Derrick Davis III set the table for Porterfield, who knocked an RBI single through the right side of the infield, as Davis took third base. Jamir Scott and Trevion Robinson walked during back-to-back at-bats, as San Cristóbal's lead shriveled to just two runs (13-11). After a ground out, Christian Hudson walked to put the leading run at the plate, but Mork got the strikeout the Dominicans desperately needed to end the defending champs' big inning.

AFCA had one last shot in the top of the seventh, but with runners on first and second, once again, Mork closed the inning and the game out with a strikeout.

Vasquez, Genao and Mendez each paced San Cristóbal with three hits, while Vasquez, Cuello and Genao were the team leaders with two RBI apiece. For Chicago, Porterfield led the squad with two hits and two RBI. Despite allowing 11 runs, the Dominican Republic six-man pitching staff struck out 15.

After the hard fought victory, San Cristóbal advances to face Mexico Zone Champion Navojoa, Sonora in a winner's bracket contest tonight at 8 p.m. ET/US, while Chicago (AFCA) will have to work its way through the loser's bracket to get back to the Bronco-11 World Series championship game for the third year in a row. The Illini will square off with East Zone Champion Bronx, New York tonight at 5:30 p.m.

GM #4: San Antonio (Edgewood), Texas 13  Chesterfield, Virginia 1 (F/5)

C.J. White’s three RBI’s powered South Zone Champion San Antonio (Edgewood), Texas to a 13-1 win over host Chesterfield, Virginia. Despite Chesterfield pitcher Carmine Rosso’s game leading four strikeouts, Chesterfield was unable to control San Antonio’s explosive offense.

San Antonio scored one run in the first and second inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. After laying down a bunt single, Jake Hernandez stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch. In the second inning Esteban Aboytez hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Diego Fernandez.

In the top of the third inning, Edgewood’s offense exploded for five runs to take a 7-0 lead. A series of defensive errors by Chesterfield allowed San Antonio’s Braden Griego and Alex Garza to score. Another Chesterfield error allowed Fernandez to score the third run of the inning. Another fielding error let Addison Medrano score the fourth run of the inning. The fifth run of the inning came from and RBI single by Hernandez, scoring Josiah Garcia.

Texas’s offense exploded for six more runs in the top of the fourth. A Garza double scored Matthew Pena to open the scoring for the inning. A fielding error allowed Garza to score. The next three runs came from a White double, scoring Medrano, Garcia, and Aboytez. The final run of the inning resulted from a wild pitch that allowed White to score.

Chesterfield’s only run came in the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded, Logan Taylor was hit by a pitch, allowing Clayton Washington to score.

San Antonio moves into the winners’ bracket with the win and will play West Zone Champion Redondo Beach, California tonight at 8 p.m. ET/US. With the loss, Chesterfield falls into the losers’ bracket and will play Luzon, Philippines at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
